Why Red Pigments Have Historically Relied on Cadmium
Rich, saturated reds — the kind needed for realistic gingival stains and deep characterization work — have traditionally been difficult to achieve without cadmium sulfoselenide pigments. Cadmium produces a stable, vivid red that holds up under repeated firing, which is exactly why it became the default in ceramic and glass pigment chemistry for decades, dental porcelain included.
The problem is that cadmium is also a recognized heavy-metal toxicant, and its use anywhere in a product that lives permanently in a patient's mouth deserves more scrutiny than it has historically gotten.

Cadmium-Free Alternatives Have Closed the Gap
For years, cadmium-free red pigment alternatives came with a real tradeoff: duller chroma, less stability under firing, or a tendency to shift toward brown after repeated glaze cycles. That tradeoff has narrowed substantially. Modern inorganic pigment chemistry — often based on iron oxide and other stable metal oxide systems — can now achieve the depth of red needed for realistic gum stains and characterization work without cadmium.
The practical result: labs no longer have to choose between esthetic quality and pigment safety. That used to be a real tradeoff. It isn't anymore.
