Dental ceramic restorations rarely rely on a single material — each layer, fired in sequence over a zirconia or lithium silicate framework, contributes something a restoration can't do without.
Dental technicians typically combine several powders, with each layer contributing a different element of the final restoration.
Some powders establish the base shade, while others control translucency, mask an underlying framework, reproduce gingival tissue, or create the final surface finish. Dentine or Body Powders
Dentine powder creates most of the visible tooth structure. It provides the primary shade, chroma, and value of a ceramic restoration.
Over a zirconia or lithium silicate framework, technicians build the general tooth form with dentine porcelain. The material must provide enough color density to establish the selected shade while still allowing the restoration to maintain a natural, translucent appearance consistent with the framework beneath it.
Incisal and Enamel Powders
Natural enamel is more translucent than the dentine underneath it. Incisal powders help recreate this effect, particularly around the incisal edge of anterior teeth.
These powders are layered over dentine porcelain to produce depth, brightness, light transmission, and subtle enamel effects. Technicians may also use them to form mamelons, halos, and other anatomical details that prevent the restoration from appearing flat or overly opaque.
Opal enamel powders add a further, distinct effect: natural enamel is opalescent, scattering blue-toned light while transmitting warmer orange tones, and opal powders are formulated to reproduce that same dual behavior in the incisal third rather than a flat, uniform translucency.
Modifier and Effect Powders
Modifier powders allow technicians to adjust specific areas without changing the entire restoration. They may be used to increase chroma, alter value, create internal characterization, or reproduce localized features found in natural teeth.
Internal modifiers can be especially useful when creating subtle transitions, cervical warmth, incisal effects, or individualized shade characteristics.
Gingival Ceramic Powders
Gingival powders reproduce the appearance of natural gum tissue. They are often used in implant restorations, full-arch cases, and restorations where artificial gingiva must blend with the patient's surrounding tissue.
Multiple pink, red, and violet tones may be layered together to create realistic depth rather than a single, uniform color.
Add-On Powder
Add-on powder serves a corrective role rather than a shade or translucency role. It is a clear porcelain technicians use to extend incisal length, rebuild a worn or under-contoured edge, or make small shape corrections after the initial bake.
Because it introduces no additional shade or opacity, add-on powder can be applied late in the build without disturbing the color and translucency already established by the dentine, enamel, and opal layers beneath it.
Glaze Powders
Glaze powder is applied near the end of the fabrication process. It creates a smooth finished surface, helps seal external characterization, and gives the restoration its final level of gloss.
