Accuracy Isn't the Same as Consistency

Most labs chase shade accuracy case by case — matching the tab, eyeballing the photo, adjusting on the fly. That's necessary, but it's not sufficient. A clinician who sends you three cases over six months isn't just asking "did this match?" each time. They're asking, often without realizing it, "will this lab give me the same result every time?"

A signature shade system is the difference between a lab that produces good individual restorations and a lab that produces a recognizable, repeatable standard of work — across both the tooth shades and the gingival shades that make a full arch read as natural.

Standardize Your Reference Conditions

Shade tabs mean nothing if lighting isn't controlled. Fix a standard light source (5500–6500K daylight-corrected), a consistent viewing distance, and a neutral gray background for every shade-taking photo.


Build a Formula Library, Not a Memory

For each shade you produce regularly, record the exact powder ratios, layering order, and stain combinations that got you there — as a written formula card, not a mental habit.


Fix Your Firing Parameters

Shade shifts case to case are often firing inconsistencies wearing a color problem's clothes. Lock in calibrated furnace schedules per material and revisit your firing schedule documentation whenever a new batch of powder or a new furnace enters the lab.

05 — Documentation Template

What a Formula Card Should Include

Field What to Record
Shade Target VITA (or house) reference shade and value/chroma notes

06 — Rollout

Getting the Whole Bench on the Same System

A shade system only works if it's shared. Start with your three or four most-requested shades and formalize those first. Run a side-by-side comparison across technicians producing the same target shade, and use any variance you find to tighten the formula card.

Revisit the documentation quarterly. Powder lots change, furnaces drift out of calibration, and clinician preferences shift over time.

Lab Tip

Photograph your formula-card results under standardized lighting and keep a visual reference library alongside the written formulas. A technician can match a photo faster than they can interpret a ratio.
